Countertransference
Kim Chin-Kook

Abstract
The auther tried to review the chronological development of the concept of countertransference from Freud to Sandler. As with other pshcyoanalytic concepts and accumulation of pshcyoanalytic experiences, the concept of countertransference has been broaden from the narrow concept of an obstacle to the analytic work to wide concept of an essential treatment tool and of including the whole personality of the analyst. But the broadening of the concept to include all of the analyst¡¯s conscious and unconscious attitudes, and even all his personality traits, renders the term practically meaningless. The most useful concept of countertransference might be to take it as referring to the specific emotional responses arouse in the analyst by the specific qualities of his patients. This would exclude general features of the analyst¡¯s personality and internal psychological structure. In my opinion, it is very important that Kernberg¡¯s findings of the usefulness of the complementary identification in countertransference in analytic treatment of borderline personality disorder. Empathy in both homologous and complementary identification of countertrasferance seems to be essential prerequisite for pshcyoanalysis.
